Later this month, Parliament will debate whether to legalise assisted dying. Kim Leadbeater MP is seeking to change the law in this area through a Private Members’ Bill.
I thank everyone who has taken the time to share their views with me on this.
As is longstanding convention for such issues of conscience, this will be a free vote. Therefore, I appreciate that many constituents will be interested to know how I intend to vote on this bill.
Having carefully considered this matter, I have decided that I will be voting against the bill when it comes before Parliament. I appreciate that some constituents will disagree with my decision, as is their right, and I will continue to listen and engage with their points of view. However, I must vote with my conscience and hope that all constituents will respect my decision.
I understand that this is an incredibly emotive issue, and there are strongly held views on both sides. I hope the debate will be conducted with respect and that we focus on how to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients.
