Being the Member of Parliament for the area I was born in is the biggest privilege and one that I do not take lightly. If I can do anything to help you, please get in touch. Gill Furniss MP, Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough
Gill Furniss MP, Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough

I’ve been proud to be the MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough constituency since a by-election in 2016. I was privileged to be re-elected in the 2017 snap election and again in 2019.

I represent and voice the concerns of my constituents in Parliament and by working with local organisations. In Parliament I am the Shadow Minister for Roads and a member of the opposition front bench.

I was born and raised in Sheffield. My dad was a steelworker in the area and I am personally committed to ensuring the steel industry has a future here in the UK.

I started work at the age of 16 as a library assistant here in the constituency. I was an elected Councillor for 16 years, most recently representing Southey Ward. I served on the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, the Fire and Rescue Authority, was a Director of both Foxhill Forum and Southey and Owlerton Regeneration Board. As a Cabinet Member for 3 years in the areas of planning, regeneration, libraries, parks and waste management I was able to broaden my local knowledge, knowledge that I am proud to employ when representing you in Parliament. As a life long union member and shop steward I am proud to have championed the rights of workers in our local community at the height of the Thatcher Government.

Sheffield is facing tough times. This Government’s punishing austerity policies have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable here and across the UK. Schools have had their funding slashed, local hospitals have been stretched to breaking point and thousands have been left unable to afford their homes. I will continue to fight against the Government’s unfair cuts and I will always hold them to account.

Your comments and suggestions are hugely valuable to myself and my team, so if you wish to write to me please do so by sending an email to gill.furniss.mp@parliament.uk.
