June 2023 Transport Questions - active travel funding cuts

At this month’s Transport Questions, I held the Government to account on its failures on active travel.

Conservative Ministers are set to miss every single one of their 4 active travel targets. And what’s their response? To slash active travel funding by 60% next year.

You can watch my question on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.

Thank you, Mr Speaker. May I also associate myself with the condolences that we send to India.

In 2021, Ministers set themselves four targets to measure progress in the active travel uptake.

Three years on, how many of these targets are they confident of meeting?

Well I can tell you today not a single one, according to the Government’s own assessment as revealed by the National Audit Office yesterday.

The National Audit Office report also uncovered a staggering cut to active travel funding of £166m, which, by the Government’s own workings, would cost the taxpayer over £700million in the long run.

So will the Minister finally come clean and confirm whether he will be slashing this vital funding by 60% next year? Yes or no?
