Gill in the Elections Bill
Gill in the Elections Bill

As an opposition whip, much of my time upon returning to Parliament has been taken up by the Election Bill committee. Along with Cat Smith and Fleur Anderson (Labour’s Cabinet Office team) I took part in the Bill committee putting forward amendments to scrap the Tory proposals to introduce voter ID requirements, make it harder to vote for overseas electors, weaken the electoral commission and silence trade unions. As the Tories have a majority on the committee, they voted down all our amendments, so the fight goes on when the Bill returns to the Commons.

The director of Labour Unions has written a great article about what’s at stake if you want to find out more: https://labourlist.org/2021/10/the-elections-bill-is-a-brazen-attack-on-our-trade-unions-it-must-be-stopped/
