Yesterday’s Spending Review laid bare the priorities of this Government and it is clear these are not the same as what matters here in Sheffield. Firefighters, police officers and teachers in this constituency will have their pay cut this year as a reward for keeping us safe and our children educated in this pandemic. Not only will this be hugely difficult for individuals and families it will damage consumer confidence in a year where we need people to visit local shops and enjoy pubs and restaurants. We know that in our local area, more people are in lower wage jobs than in most of the country. It was so disappointing that the Chancellor announced the smallest minimum wage rise in years. Not only have the Tories broken their promise for the minimum wage to reach £9 in 2020 but it won’t even reach this in 2021.

The Chancellor had the opportunity to set out plans for a strengthened nation post Covid but yesterday we heard no plans to invest in ordinary families as we face the deepest economic decline in 300 years. Labour would build a Country where ordinary people can earn a decent living and make sure that no part of our country is left behind.
