September Community Update
Visit to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
I was pleased to visit Battersea Dogs and Cats Home recently to meet staff and discuss the need for improved animal welfare legislation.
I reaffirmed my commitment to standing up for better animal welfare standards in Parliament.
Burngreave Foodbank
In August, I was invited to visit Burngreave Foodbank, run by the Trussell Trust.
I spoke to the dedicated team of staff and volunteers about the growing need for their support in the midst of the cost of living crisis.
It is shocking that in 2023 people are still having to rely on foodbanks for the everyday essentials. The work they do is vital, and I encourage people to support them any way they can.
You can find details of how to get help and how to give help here:

Sheffield Healthy Holidays
Last month, I had the pleasure of being invited to Firvale Healthy Living Centre to visit a session of Sheffield Healthy Holidays, a scheme which provides activities and food during the summer holidays to children who receive free school meals.
The children were having a great time, being led by dedicated staff as well as inspirational young women who volunteered.
If you know of any young people who might benefit from this in future, please visit:

Casework Corner
Over the last month, my team and I have opened 340 new cases, helping people with their issues and concerns.
The most common issues raised with me were:
- Animal welfare
- Asylum and immigration
- Transport
Pitsmoor Adventure Playground
Over the summer, I was delighted to visit Pitsmoor Adventure Playground. I spoke to the Playwork team who provide fantastic activities for children; that week they had a woodland theme, led by a dedicated Playworker putting into practice new skills she learned at forest schools training.
It was great to speak to so many children and parents all enjoying the sunny weather.
Labour’s Shadow Roads Minister
Transport Questions: Road Safety
In Transport Questions, I quizzed Ministers on their failures to improve road safety.
The last Labour Government cut road fatalities by almost half, but under this Tory Government fatalities have only fallen by 8%. Improving road safety is vital to encourage people to take up cycling, walking, running and wheeling in their everyday journeys – but under this Government, progress is stagnating.
Labour policy: Clean power by 2030
The next Labour Government will launch an urgent mission for a fossil-fuel-free electricity system by 2030.
Labour will double our onshore wind technology, triple our solar power, and quadruple our offshore wind. All this will save £93 billion for UK households, cutting energy bills for good and creating thousands of high-quality local jobs.
Labour will build an energy system for the future, run for the British people.
Members’ coffee morning
I am looking forward to welcoming Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough CLP members to a coffee morning on Friday 15th September.
Tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks will be available, and it will be a great chance to catch up with local Labour Party members in a relaxed and friendly environment.
You should have received an email with your invitation. To RSVP, or if you have any questions, please email me on:
