Gill speaking in the Westminster Hall Debate
Gill speaking in the Westminster Hall Debate

As Chair of Labour Friends of Yemen, it was great to secure a debate in Westminster Hall this month to speak out about the humanitarian crisis. I was pleased that many other Labour MPs joined me despite the limited time for the debate. I spoke of the worsening crisis in the country as the civil war wages on for a seventh year, I spoke of the urgent need to reinvest in the UK aid budget and of our countries uniquely significant position as the UN Security Council penholder in ending the crisis.

The situation remains perilous and the Minister, James Celverly MP, agreed with me that the humanitarian crisis is interwoven with the conflict and that the only way to end the crisis is to end the conflict.

There is clearly a great sense amongst many Labour MPs that something more must be done by the Government to push for a peace deal. I was pleased that following the debate six more MPs and Peers joined the group, they will now be part of the team that pushes for opportunities to speak out about this important issue and take part in upcoming debates.
