Today, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has confirmed it will be going ahead with the planned closure of its Sheffield office, moving 247 jobs to London. This is despite the concerns that have been raised again and again by staff in the office and MPs here in Parliament. It is absolute madness that BIS, which is responsible for delivering the Northern Powerhouse, is set on moving jobs out of the city and down to London. Costs are so high there that it won’t save the Department any money in the long run, and it turns the Government’s aim of moving civil service jobs out of the capital completely on its head. Last month it was agreed that the National Audit Office (NAO) would look into the move, which will undoubtedly show it up for the nonsense it is. In the meantime, I and my fellow Labour MPs in the city will continue the fight to keep BIS jobs in Sheffield.
